Four and a half stars “The reader gets to identify with the main character, who is introduced as a marginal figure in a world of activists, a character who evolves together with the reader. The tale also focuses on the everyday problems the main character has to deal with, his loneliness and general existential crisis. The result is a great story about the relations between animals and humans. The reader is deeply involved and carried along until the end.”
ALEXANDER G KRISTJANSSON, MORGUNBLADID DAILY
“Eggertsson has managed to compose an entertaining and yet thought-provoking novel on an interesting topic, a great find for those who care about the well-being of animals and men. Cleverly written and funny, and yet compelling.”
BRYNHILDUR BJORNSDOTTIR, FRETTABLADID DAILY
“The relations of humans and animals is complex, intricate, and often secret. We kill animals and we love animals. … Gunnar Theodor Eggertsson has studied our relations with the creatures in our daily life, as well as in our culture … Killing Season is a travel novel on many levels. Asbjörn Axel goes to the Netherlands in order to make a documentary film about Iceland’s most famous animal rights activist who appears to live in the Netherlands, and the action takes place there. Eggertsson is familiar with the Netherlands, and he spent some time in that country while writing the book in order to get acquainted with the work of animal activist groups on the terrain, making interviews and including some of those in the book. … A wholesome and challenging read, never sermonising, an exciting and entertaining tale of travels to areas that are seldom mentioned in fictional works.”
