Johanna, an Icelandic woman living in Northern Italy, leads a simple and quiet life with her son and Italian father-in-law. One day, policeman Roberto Farro arrives to investigate the death of a woman in the nearby area - he has no clues except that Johanna's phone number is found with the deceased. Who is this woman and how is she connected to Johanna?

Johanna is reluctantly drawn into the investigation, which spans across Italy and all the way to Sicily. Before long, an unexpected and fateful series of events begins. Gripping family secrets come to light, and strong but confusing feelings spark between Johanna and Roberto, leaving them unsure of how to react.
