May the Moon Take Me Away (2021)
A charming and entertaining story! Maney lives on a farm with her grandparents. As an animal lover, there’s no place else she would rather be. The orphan lamb leaps around her feet while tourists buy Icelandic doughnuts and sheep heads from her. The kids at school are sometimes difficult, like Solmundur who moves to the next farm over. He’s like an alien gawking at everything he sees. But after they rescue a swan egg from a fox everything changes. Late one evening they visit a fairy mound and are swallowed by darkness. But the best thing is that Solmundur has a little sister who might just become Maney’s sister as well.
Reviews
Thorgrimur Thrainsson has decades of experience writing for children and he doesn't fail to impress here. … One might say that this is the story of two children who are sent to the countryside because contemporary life, for various reasons, does not suit them. Maney because of a nervous disorder that means she cannot deal with overstimulation in her environment and Soli because of his social circumstances and physical disability. … CONCLUSION: A terrific book about contemporary children who find themselves in the nostalgia of pastoral bliss.
